Portable anti-tank system “Skif”

Portable anti-tank missile system (ATMS) is intended for hitting of numerous kinds of stationary and moving ground targets from modern armoured vehicles with dynamic armour protection to defensive facilities, low-flying helicopters and small-size surface vessels at any time of day and under adverse weather conditions on any land surface and ground as long as target stays visible to operator.


Portable anti-tank missile system (ATMS) is intended for hitting of numerous kinds of stationary and moving ground targets from modern armoured vehicles with dynamic armour protection to defensive facilities, low-flying helicopters and small-size surface vessels at any time of day and under adverse weather conditions on any land surface and ground as long as target stays visible to operator.

A number of prospective technical solutions that provide up-to-date level of technical characteristics are used in offered ATMS:

  • High interference immunity of guidance system with laser control channel under natural  and enemy arranged active and passive interferences  is achieved with missile guidance via the laser channel with photodetector on board of the missile turned to enemy-opposite side;
  • Tandem hollow-charge warhead (WH) providing hitting of any type of armoured targets, including tanks equipped with dynamic protection;
  • Booster and cruise engines providing increased missile flight speed and firing range;
  • Modern hardware with digital signal processing;
  • Television sight channel with digital video image processing provides automatic target tracking with no man operation, what improves firing efficiency under combat use;
  • Increase of laser control system energy margin for application range and targeting increase;
  • Targeting under low-energy level of emission with purpose to conceal the control channel;
  • Use of remote control unit (RCU) providing the ability of missile firing from a distance to operator;
  • Module assembly allows modernization implementation of all system component parts on any period of life cycle;
  • Absence on wireline communication.

ATMS is easy to use and maintain. 

 

ATMS “Skif” is dependable in use under various operating conditions. ATMS “Skif” provides efficient firing in such conditions of combat application (providing visual sight of target):

  • On land with any surface, ground and cover, occurring in places of subject’s operation, including trenches, under conditions of nuclear, bacteriological and chemical weapons appliance, also on areas contaminated by chemical agent, nuclear and bacteriological means;
    • At ±45° horizontal and -10° - +30° vertical firing angles;
    • At day time, in twilight and night time with standard military illumination facilities;
    • Under interferences caused by missile launch from container-launching unit (missile engine radiation, dust, smoke);
    • Under adverse weather conditions (rain, fog, snowfall, hail, haze, looming, refraction at 20 m/s wind gusts), also atmosphere dust and smoke;
    • Under simultaneous operation of standard military radio and illumination facilities, including optical quantum generator radiating at the enemy direction;
    • Under active and passive interferences, unpremeditated and set up on field by enemy (including those to appear at battle site on shell and mines explosion, conflagration, actuation of pyrotechnical facilities);
    • On firing at maneuvering target;
    • On firing at above the water obstacles, including frozen ones, also at surface vessels targets;
    • On ATMS’s and target’s situation on area 3000 m high above the sea level;
    • On simultaneous exposure to several abovementioned factors possible combinations.

 

Performance characteristics


Operation range.

a)      Maximum: not less than 5 km at any time of day (with thermal sight);

b)     Minimum: minimum acceptable range – 100 m;

 

Precision. Chance of target hit not less than 90% at day and night time.

 

Type of guidance. Semi-automatic passive guidance system provides teleorientation of the missile within the beam of optical quantum generator on target autotracking (or on manual target tracking by gunner by television image on the monitor of remote control unit).

Television sight channel with digital processing of video image of target provides target tracking in automatic mode with no operator involved, what increases the firing efficiency under conditions of combat application according to “fire and forget” principle with opportunity to hit from above.

 

Type of warhead.

 

Tandem hollow-charge warhead provides:

-         Hitting of modern armoured targets of any type, including tanks with dynamic protection. No less than 0,8 frequency ratio piercing of no less than 800 mm thick solid armour normally behind the dynamic protection is available on all firing ranges. Presence of dynamic protection on target considerably reduces firing efficiency of exiting hollow-charge armaments, that have monoblock warhead (WH with one charge);

-         Target hitting, both openly situated and those behind masking covers (steel and capronic nets with 20x30 cm cell size and up to 2 mm wire (thread) diameter, bushes with branch diameter up to 10 mm);

-         Warhead actuation on weapon emplacements, field construction, ferroconcrete and brick walls;

-         Warhead actuation on armour contact at 0° - 80°;

-         Warhead actuation on land surface, including areas with snow cover.

 

Operating characteristics

 

High-precision and efficient weapon, applicable :

-         On ATMS’s and target’s situation on area 3000 m high above the sea level;

-         Under simultaneous operation of standard military radio and illumination facilities, including optical quantum generator radiating at the enemy direction;

-         Under active and passive interferences, unpremeditated and set up on field by enemy (including those to appear at battle site on shell and mines explosion, conflagration, actuation of pyrotechnical facilities);

-         On firing at maneuvering target;

-         On firing at above the water obstacles, including frozen ones, also at surface vessels targets;

-         On simultaneous exposure to several abovementioned factors possible combinations.

 

All-weather application.

 

ATMS provides efficient firing (providing visual sight of target):

-         On land surface with any surface, ground and cover, occurring in places of subject’s operation, including trenches, under conditions of nuclear, bacteriological and chemical weapons appliance, also on areas contaminated by chemical agent, nuclear and bacteriological means;

-         At day time, in twilight and night time with standard military illumination facilities;

-         Under interferences caused by missile launch from container-launching unit (missile engine radiation, dust, smoke);

-         Under adverse weather conditions (rain, fog, snowfall, hail, haze, looming, refraction at 20 m/s wind gusts), also atmosphere dust and smoke;

-         On simultaneous exposure to several abovementioned factors possible combinations.

 

Climate conditions of application: any climate conditions, operation temperature -40°C - +55 °C.

 

Transportability: ATMS retains its performance characteristics after transporting by any type of transport:

-         Railway and water transport with no limitation of distance and speed;

-         Motor transport on asphalted, cobble-stone, earth roads and off-road with 10 time loading and unloading for up to 10 000 km distance;

-         Air transport in non-hermetic cabins on up to 12 km altitude with no limitation of speed, distance, with 10 time take-off/landing cycles, including parachute drop (descent) to specified area.

 

Storing: minimal term of missile storage in transport and launch container - 10 years, term of launching unit storage in manufacturer’s package – 15 years, provided by adherence to the  temperature and humidity operation conditions, including 3 year of field storage/operation.

 

Launching mode:  from surface or vehicle; capability of transporting by crew for short distances.

 

Immunity against radio-electronic interferences:

ATMS is immune to:

-         exposure of enemy’s radio-electronic jamming;

-         Under simultaneous operation of standard military radio and illumination facilities, including optical quantum generator radiating at the enemy direction;

-         Under active and passive interferences, unpremeditated and set up on field by enemy (including those to appear at battle site on shell and mines explosion, conflagration, actuation of pyrotechnical facilities);

-         On simultaneous exposure to several abovementioned factors possible combinations.

 

Survivability of ATMS crew:

Minimal time of crew vulnerability to enemy fire depends on time required for replacement of used transport and launch container situated on the launching unit with a new one after the missile launch and it takes 20-30 seconds.

 

Remote control included to the ATMS gives crew an opportunity to stay covered on 50 m distance from launching unit. And on combat operation crew’s (operator’s) duties come to performing target search and detection with remote control unit, engaging target autotracking and launch of anti-tank guided missile ATGM. Further ATGM guiding process is performed in automatic mode till the target hit with no personal operation.  Missile guidance is performed by automatic guidance system by missile teleorientation within spatial structured beam of laser. Spatial structure of  laser beam field allows the on-board missile guidance system to determine it’s coordinates relatively to the center of the laser beam and to keep missile in it’s center automatically.

Increased crew survivability is achieved by implementation of Remote Control Unit that allows the operator to be situated at a 50 meter distance from the launching unit and providing the opportunity for operator to operate in lying position, kneeling position, standing in trench, from prepared and unprepared firing positions.

 

ATMS (see fig.1) consists of such parts:

-         Launching unit (with tripod);

-         Guidance unit;

-         Remote control unit;

-         Special accessories;

-         Set of parts;

-         Anti-tank guided missile in transport and launch container (amount confirmed by supply agreement);

 

Launching unit (with tripod) consists of stand (tripod), turning platform with set of tracking electric drives and instrument unit. Launching unit is structurally performed solidly and provides fast and firm fastening of missile and guidance unit on it.

 

Guidance unit (see fig.2) consists of:

a)      Tele-optical wide field of sight channel;

b)     Tele-optical narrow field of sight channel;

c)      Laser range finder;

d)     Laser guidance channel;

Microbolometer thermal imager (include on demand of customer).

Anti-tank guided missile in transport and launch unit consists of:

a)      Guided missile composed of:

-         Cruise engine;

-         Warhead;

-         Instrument unit;

b)     Booster engine;

Transport and launch unit (TLU).

Remote control unit is intended for target search, recognition and selection, missile launch and guidance in auto-tracking mode.

 

Possibility of on-vehicle mount: ATMS construction gives a possibility to mount it on wide range of various wheeled (SUV, APC-like vehicles) and crawler carriers.

 

Penetration ability: Tandem hollow-charge warhead provides:

-         Hitting of modern armoured targets of any type, including tanks with dynamic protection. No less than 0,8 frequency ratio piercing of no less than 800 mm thick solid armour normally behind the dynamic protection is available on all firing ranges. Presence of dynamic protection on target considerably reduces firing efficiency of exiting hollow-charge armaments, that have monoblock warhead (WH with one charge);

Readiness time: Time required to bring ATMS from stowed to combat state, including those mounted on vehicles – not more than 3 min. Second shot can be made in 1 min.

Telescopic sight

 Guidance device PN-S has two tele-optical channels:

-         Wide field of sight channel 9° x6,5° 45’ that corresponds to 4x zoom, with additional 2x digital zoom;

-         Narrow field of sight channel 2° 20’ x 1° 50’ that corresponds to 16x zoom, with additional 2x digital zoom;

 

Launching container

 

Missile is supplied, stored and being used in forces within hermetic transport and launch container. Missile launch is performed from transport and launch container placed on launching unit.

Use of hermetic container facilitates missile storage, launching and transporting.

 

Training

Gunners’ (operators’) training process stipulates application of sufficiently simple training and control complex (TCC). Training process can be conducted in field conditions and in class.

In field conditions training are conducted by firing imitation on deployed ATMS. Target (movable or stationary) is being placed on 3,5-4 km range on 4-10 m height above ground-level. Laser beam sensor with transmitting radio channel is being placed in the center of target, and operator control information receiving, processing and storing equipment is being placed near the launching unit (near the operator).

First stage of training is considered finished, if gunner have learned to find, recognize and keep target in manual mode on target’s shooting mark (at point of target’s laser beam sensor placement) with less than 0,5 m deviation from shooting mark.

Training ATGM firing is being conducted after this stage. Due to this the target is being placed at 3,5-4 km range and at 4-10 m height above ground-level. Laser beam sensor with transmitting radio channel is being placed in the center of target, and operator control information receiving, processing and storing equipment is being placed near the launching unit (near the operator). Guided missile firing is performed as provided by ATMS instruction with control of operator’s work results with help of TCC. Training is considered finished after two target’s silhouette hit in succession.

For the purpose of ATMS crew training facilitation and preservation of battle ATMSs the manufacturer supplies on customer’s demand:

-         Dimension and weight mockups of anti-tank guided missile within transport and launch container for ATMS crew’s training;

-         Training mockup in section of anti-tank guided missile within transport and launch container for study of ATGM’s construction and composition.

 

Control and checking equipment.

 

During ATMS operation additional control and checking equipment is not required, for system has means of self-control and before every ATMS launch automatic self-control is performed with further missile launch allowance on complex’s readiness. Secondary CCE is required only on performance of ATMS repair-and-renewal operations. Due to this secondary CCE is supplied by manufacturer on customer’s demand.

 

ATMS’s advantages.

 

1)      Target hitting high precision;

2)      Versatility of use (armoured vehicles of all types, fortifications – pillboxes, ferroconcrete bunkers etc., non-armoured and light-armoured targets, hover helicopters);

3)      Hitting of all targets beyond the zone of enemy’s effective back-fire due to increased range of action;

4)      Increase of crew’s survivability due to remote control implementation that gives operator an opportunity to be situated at 50 meter distance from the launching unit;

5)      Provision of operator’s to operation in lying position, kneeling position, standing in trench, from prepared and unprepared firing positions.

6)      Twenty-four-hour application, hitting of all mentioned targets at day and night time;

7)      Full protection from enemy’s optical interference generator stations’ exposure;

8)      Mounting possibility on wide range of various wheeled and crawler-carriers.

9)      Guided missiles do not require technical maintenance due to operating and storing.

 

Thereby, high combat capabilities of offered ATMS allow characterizing it not only as dedicated anti-tank facility, but also as high-precision versatile defending and assault weapon, that hits large quantity of different targets on rather sufficient tactical depth of enemy troops.
