Land, Naval and Internal Homeland Security Systems Exhibition DefExpo India 2018, held in the Indian city of Chennai last week, became an effective platform for Ukraine’s expanding military-technical cooperation with India.
UKROBORONPROM, together with UOP SC "SpetsTechnoExport", represented national interests, focused on the conversion of the Ukrainian-Indian MTC potential into bilateral projects.
"These agreements concern, in particular, transfers of defense technologies under the program “Make in India”, as well as joint participation in modernization of armored vehicles and air defense systems in India," said First Deputy to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleg Hladkovskiy, the head of Ukrainian delegation.
Hladkovskiy informed that during the meeting with DRDO chief Dr S Christopher a plan for further bilateral cooperation was discussed. The parties agreed to conclude a bilateral memorandum on joint developments in various MTC sectors. In particular, it was agreed to start cooperation in production of precision munitions and joint projects in the armored industry.
During the meetings of Ukrainian delegation with the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army General Bipin Rawat and the Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar, the prospects of Ukraine’s further participation in military modernization programs and supply of new equipment for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of India under the program "Make in India" were discussed.
Besides, an agreement was reached on the commencement of cooperation in a number of projects, including creation of precision munitions and joint projects in the armored industry.
In general, SC "SpetsTechnoExport" concluded new contracts with a total value of more than half a billion hryvnias between UOP enterprises and the Indian defense industrial complex.

"During negotiations with the leaders of the Indian defense department, we discussed continued delivery and joint production of gas turbine engines, maintenance of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya by Ukrainian specialists, the projects of complex modernization of T-72, BMP-2 tanks and air defense systems, the production of engines for Indian tanks, as well as other promising projects ", – added Pavlo Bukin, Director General of the SC "UkrOboronProm ".
In turn, the Defence Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed the interest of her country in strategic cooperation with Ukrainian MIC. Nirmala Sitharaman noted that she is familiar with the process of integrating innovations and capabilities of Ukrainian defense industry within the framework of “Make in India”.
The DefExpo-2018 has been held in India since 2000, every two years, with the support of the Ministry of Defense of India. Leading defense companies represent their products here. Armored vehicles, rocket-artillery weapons, air defense equipment, naval equipment, communications and electronic warfare equipment, unmanned systems are displayed in the framework of DefExpo.
